Who We Are!
Acts 2:38-42 THE MODEL CHURCH...
38 Peter said to them, ”Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness
of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
39 For the promise is for you and your children, and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God shall
call to Himself.”
40 And with many other words he solemnly testified and kept on exhorting them saying “be saved from this
perverse generation!”
41 So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and were added that day about three thousand
souls.
42 And they were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking
of bread and to prayer.
Comments on Acts 2:42 :
There are all sorts of churches. Some meet in ornate buildings with stained glass windows; others gather in
more modest buildings, huts and even outdoors. Some Christians meet together in secret, after dark,
because Christianity is against the law in their country.
Churches can have very different personalities, and therefore express worship in a variety of ways. But it
makes no difference what the building looks like or whether the pastor wears robes or blue jeans. The
important thing is that the church is biblical. Churches based on the Bible have at least four things in
common. ( Go Back To See Acts 2:42 – the very first Christian church ):
Learning - A biblical church is a learning church. God has so much to tell his people!
Fellowship - Fellowship was vital to the early church’s survival, just as it is today. God didn’t design the
Christian life to be a solitary venture. He wants us to encourage one another. God wants his people to enjoy
one another and build wholesome relationships with other Christians.
Worship - The breaking of bread is an early term for the Lord’s Supper. The early church met regularly to
worship together and to remember Christ’s death and resurrection.
Prayer - Prayer was the lifeline of the first church, as it is for us today. If a church is not a praying church, it
will not know what Christ wants it to do.
We here at Calvary Baptist Church believe that we are living out this same style of learning,
fellowship, worship and prayer. Our faith and hope is in our savior Jesus Christ who provided
salvation for each person who would receive Him, by willingly bearing his cross to set us free
from the bondage of sin. Death could not hold the precious lamb of God; for God raised up Jesus
from the Grave on the third day and then raised Him into glory to be seated at His right hand.
Rev. Peter C. Wilson has been shepherding the flock at Calvary Baptist Church since 1997.
