We are presently ministering to the community of Haitians living in the Dominican
Republic in the barrio of Las Colinas outside of the city of San Pedro de Marquiris
(Sammy Sousa’s home town). The pastor, Tanis Derolus, is from Haiti, having
escaped to the Dominican Republic during one of their military coups after
returning from seminary in Jamaica in 1993. He married Esther, a business major
and teacher who had been a translator for our medical teams in the 1980’s. She is
the daughter of the head deacon of the large Haitian Missionary Baptist Church in
the city of La Romana, which we built in 1985. Her parents had left Haiti as young
people to work in the sugar cane factories; Esther therefore is considered
Dominican, though her cultural background is Haitian. Tanis now has papers
certifying that he also is a Dominican, though definitely not a native… They have
three young children and are living in the casa pastoral  which we completed for
them in 2003. They speak Creole, Spanish, and English, but most of their
congregation speaks only Creole and Spanish.

Tanis and Esther felt God’s call to reach out to the extremely impoverished
Haitians living far in the depths of the sugar cane fields in bateys. They answered
by moving to the barrio of Las Colinas, though they could have remained in La
Romana where Pastor Phanord had been sent as a missionary in 1976.

The congregation of Christo paro las Naciones (Christ for the Nations) is hoping
we can give “finishing touches” to Colegio Moriah, (the school) and complete the
church building for them in January, 2008. Some of our team will build pews and
desks, make metal grates (ornate bars) for doors and windows, repair plumbing
and electrical work, pour concrete, “beautify” already existing rooms, and
anything else they can do for the people of Las Colinas.

Wellsboro First Baptist teams first visited the D.R. in 1985 to work with Pastor
Jean Luc Phanord in La Romana where our team built the lower portion of the
large Haitian Missionary Baptist Church. In 1987, our team built a church on batey
Heguera, and in 1989 built a large part of a 2-block square wall around what would
later become the Good Samaritan Hospital. We returned to Pastor Phanord’s
ministry in 1995 and began by pouring cement on the flat roof of the hospital to
support what would later become a 2nd floor… We also built a church /education
building on batey Alta Gracia. In 1998 we built a church/educational building on
batey La Chuga, and in 2001 built a church/educational building on batey
Cannistillo. Pastor Phanord was killed in a plane crash that year.

Our ministry with Pastor Tanis and Esther began in 2003 when we completed the
building and finishing of the pastor’s home, worked on the dormitory for visiting
groups, and prepared the site for the building of a new school building. In 2004,
we continued the early work which had been enhanced by teams from Bar
Harbor, Maine, and students from Gordon College. Team members are all over
Pennsylvania and New York State.

With each construction team, we also send a medical team composed of doctors
and nurses and occasionally a dentist and dental assistants; they hold medical
clinics in remote bateys as well as in the chuches of La Romana and Las Colinas,
and also in schools when we’re invited. The medical teams are under the
direction of the ABC missionary Kristy Engel.

We also minister on bateys with VBS-type stories and teach English in Colegio
Moriah. An excellent ministry with the teens and college team members, is to
play with the children who love to interact with the American Christians.
