WHICH ONE?

Jesus asked which one WAS a
neighbour? The Lawyer can not bring
himself to use the despised word
“Samaritan” so he says, “the one who
had mercy on him”.

MAN ATTACKED

Down the lonely road from Jerusalem to
his home in Jericho the man is mugged,
robbed and left half dead.

PRIEST

This “holy man” also comes from
Jerusalem where he has been serving
God in the temple. He sees the man in
need but refuses to help and passes by
on the other side.

LEVITE

He also has worked in the temple and
in the same way, when he came to the
place and saw him, went by on the
other side.

SAMARITAN

A despised man! (Jews hated
Samaritans, even calling them “dogs”)
Why should he help a Jew? Is he
endangering himself? But he took pity
on him and helped by bandaging and
treating his wounds (where did he get
bandages? Did he tear up his own
clothes?) He allows him to ride on his
donkey.

INN

Although the man was a complete
stranger, the Samaritan cared for the
man there and gave the inn-keeper
two coins (two days wages!) to pay for
any further help the man needed and
he promised more when he returns.

LAWYER'S QUESTION

He asks Jesus the question, “what
must I do to inherit eternal life?” the
man gives Jesus his own answers “1.
Love the Lord your God, 2. Love your
neighbor as yourself.” The man tries
to avoid the challenge of this by
asking “what does it mean to love my
neighbor? Who is my neighbor?”
